Septic Tank Maintenance
The Eau Claire City/County Health Department administers Wisconsin Administrative Code SPS 383.52 which requires that all septic systems in the State of Wisconsin be maintained by being inspected and/or pumped on a regular maintenance schedule. Under this rule most “conventional” septic systems must be inspected and/or pumped at least once every 3 years, but certain unusual systems require maintenance as often as every 3 months. Septic tanks are required to be pumped when the combined depth of sludge and scum is greater than 1/3rd the entire tank volume.
The Health Department sends notices to all home and business owners which are connected to a private onsite wastewater treatment system to remind them when their septic tank maintenance is due. The pumper or inspector completes the notice after the maintenance is completed and the owner sends it back to the Health Department.List of Pumpers and Master Plumbers who have previously performed service in Eau Claire County.
Blank septic tank maintenance reports are available from the Health Department. Please return a report to the Health Department any time your tank is pumped. This resets your maintenance and will prevent you from receiving a reminder notice before your next tank scheduled maintenance is actually due.
Holding Tank Maintenance
The Health Department sends quarterly pumping reports each calendar quarter to holding tank owners. Owners are required to return the quarterly pumping reports to the Health Department after filling in the amounts pumped, the dates of pumping, the name of the pumper, and the disposal location.
Aerobic or Pretreatment Maintenance
Some septic systems use specialized treatment devices to provide additional treatment to wastewater. These devices produce a “highly treated” wastewater which contains fewer harmful bacteria and can help a septic system last longer. However, these systems require much more frequent maintenance than conventional septic systems.
