Emergency Medical Services

Print

Emergency medical services is supervised by the deputy chief of Prevention-EMS, with the assistance of a division chief, shift battalion chief and a station captain. The department has a tiered EMS system. All of the protective employees (91) are certified to provide medical care at the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic) level, and approximately one-third are trained at the advanced level of Paramedic. Department fire engines respond with a mixture of EMT-Bs and/or EMT-Ps. The three front-line ambulances are staffed with two EMT-Ps, and there are three reserve ambulances available to be staffed by engine company personnel if needed. Department paramedics are certified in ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PEPP (Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals). The department’s medical director is Dr. Stephanie Wagner.

There are approximately 7,300 requests for ambulance assistance each year. Designated emergency medical personnel and equipment are placed at all six fire stations. The City contracts with surrounding entities outside the city limits to provide EMS delivery, so the total area covered is approximately 431 square miles.

Emergency medical personnel also work with suppression personnel to routinely inspect local businesses and apartment buildings for fire hazards and safety violations.

There is close cooperation with Mayo and Sacred Heart Hospitals for EMS training and to maintain and improve the service to the community. Emergency medical personnel respond to requests for emergency medical aid, fire calls, rescue calls, and whenever their special skills are needed.
