(9/29/2016) The City of Eau Claire and community partners have completed a public market feasibility study. The study's goal was to determine if a year-round enclosed public market facility, which would increase the production and consumption of local food is possible. In depth market research concluded a large many-vendor public market is not feasible but a smaller-scaled hybrid version, led by the private sector, could work. Further, if this indoor market located itself near the farmers market pavilion in Phoenix Park, a branded "market district" could be created to foster even more food-related developments and activities. The study, linked below, serves as a useful guide for food businesses and entrepreneurs to better understand advantages and challenges related to fulfilling the vision.
The City received generous financial support from the USDA, Group Health Cooperative of Eau Claire, Marshfield Clinic, and Mayo Clinic Health System - NW WI Region to conduct the study.
